Santa Ana winds in California are set to intensify across the state, bringing strong offshore gusts and dangerous fire weather from Thursday into Friday. With Red Flag Warnings covering much of Los Angeles and Ventura counties, dry vegetation and low humidity could allow new fires to spread rapidly. Here are the latest forecasts, regional risks and safety measures.

When Will Santa Ana Winds in California Peak

Southern California’s first major Santa Ana wind event of fall 2026 is expected to strengthen on Thursday, October 15, and peak between Thursday afternoon and Friday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

The strongest conditions could continue into early Saturday before gradually easing over the weekend.

Wind speeds are forecast to reach 20–40 mph across broad areas, with gusts of 40–60 mph in some locations and up to 70 mph in exposed mountain areas.

Temperatures could climb to 85–95°F (29–35°C), while relative humidity falls to around 5%–15% in parts of the region.

The pattern develops as high pressure inland drives air toward the coast. As the air descends through mountain passes, it warms and dries, creating conditions that favor rapid fire growth.

Wildfire Risk Rises Across Los Angeles and Nearby Counties

The NWS has issued Red Flag Warnings for much of Los Angeles and Ventura counties, with additional warnings covering interior mountain areas farther west.

The greatest concern is where strong winds overlap with dry vegetation and very low humidity.

Areas west of Interstate 405 may face greater fire danger than locations that received more recent rainfall.

Even a small ignition could become a fast-moving wildfire as winds carry embers beyond roads and other barriers. Strong gusts may also bring down trees and power lines, creating additional hazards.

Southern California Edison is considering Public Safety Power Shutoffs in selected high-risk communities, including parts of Malibu, to reduce the chance of electrical equipment sparking a fire.

Residents should check official utility notices for affected areas and timing.

California Officials Urge Residents to Prepare for Fire Weather

Los Angeles County public safety agencies are urging residents to prepare for elevated fire danger through Friday night.

Residents should review evacuation routes, prepare essential supplies and keep phones charged in case of an emergency.

Anyone living near hillsides or other fire-prone areas should be ready to follow evacuation instructions without delay.

🔥Wildfire Safety Tips: How to Stay Prepared

Strong Santa Ana winds can cause wildfires to spread quickly. Take these precautions to protect yourself and your household.

🔔 Monitor official alerts

Follow local emergency updates and National Weather Service warnings. Sign up for emergency notifications in your area.

🎒 Prepare an emergency kit

Keep water, medications, flashlights, phone chargers, important documents, and essential supplies ready to go.

🏠 Reduce fire hazards around your home

Clear dry leaves and dead vegetation from around your house. Avoid outdoor activities that could create sparks.

🛣️ Know your evacuation plan

Identify escape routes, keep your vehicle fueled or charged, and leave immediately when authorities issue an evacuation order.

Stay weather-aware: Check local wind conditions and available weather indicators on GoWeatherRadar. Always follow official evacuation orders and wildfire safety guidance.

Although this event is not expected to match the widespread severity of the January 2025 Santa Ana wind episode, dangerous conditions may still develop in particularly dry areas.

Winds are expected to weaken over the weekend, but Santa Ana events can recur throughout fall and winter, making continued preparation essential.
